Someone Out There is laughing right now. Having a good chuckle over how this always happens to me, this notion of all or nothing in the scheme of having plans.
Does this happen to you? One day the cell’s ringing off the hook and your various email/Web pages are loaded with whatcha doin tonights? A week ago you inadvertently commit to dinner with one friend and, oops, someone calls days later with we’re going out! you have to come! and before you know it, you – little ole you – are double-booked. To make an appearance out with That Group From High School and grab food with The Cousin Barely Seen. Yeah, at the same time, because you’re magic!
Plans don’t have the courtesy of spreading themselves out, do they? It’s not one thing mid-week, another Friday, then some other to-do on Saturday (unless you get super lucky or just have that many friends). Oh, no. In fact, if it’s not five things I’m supposed to do in one night, it’s usually nothing. I hate to be cynical and think all my friends call each other up, conspire together to stay home the same night, but what are the odds here?
Why this happens, I’m not sure. It’s quite possible I’m looking at this most egocentrically, but it’s just interesting how it always turns out. Perhaps to another friend, it’s I who am part of some weekend conspiracy. Like, why can’t she want to go out SATURDAY instead?
One night, they feel like the Prom Queen! Everyone wants me there! Which stops should I make! So many choices, you know? And, don’t get me wrong, I’d take those nights over the Can’t Get Anyone To Call Me Back days, hands down. The thing is, you can never predict which way the pendulum will swing in my group.
Except this week. Wednesday, as in the day before most of the world has off (boo for those of you stuck working; I feel your pain, believe me)? Inboxes are full, the cell’s already ringing. And five minutes ago? I was invited to a comedy club show. Comedy, people. To a girl who adores laughing till she cries, Wednesday cannot get any better. I mean, how will we sleep tonight?
